The PALS Project, a non-profit HIV prevention project
in Broward County, works with HIV+ gay, bisexual, queer and questioning
men. Located at the Gay and
Lesbian Community Center of South Florida, the PALS Project provides HIV+
men with real social support, accurate HIV information and practical,
effective strategies and tools to lead safer, richer lives.
Through
creative efforts, the Project aims to decrease the number of new HIV
infections in the community. The
PALS Project provides a safe, non-judgmental, supportive environment for
men to look at their own behavior and to make wise choices that benefit
their health and the health of others.
The
PALS Project works with HIV+ men of all ages, ethnicities and economic
backgrounds to help reduce the stigma of living with HIV and bring HIV+
guys into prevention activities through social support and educational
programs. We are not
here to judge or preach what not
to do.
Since
2002, the PALS (Positive Action for Living
Safely) Project has impacted thousands of HIV+ gay and bisexual men
through workshops, one-on-one health counseling, social events, discussion
groups, community forums, outreach events and prevention campaigns.
The
PALS Project currently facilitates two small-group based programs:
the L.I.F.E. Program ®
and CHOICES.
The
L.I.F.E. Program
This
18-week peer support/health counseling program is designed to boost the
immune system, reduce risk behavior, enhance adherence to health routines
and lead to better overall health. Based
on current scientific research, the L.I.F.E. Program (Learning
Immune Function Enhancement)
provides practical step-by-step guidance to help participants create and
implement personal plans for long-term thriving with HIV.
If
you are HIV+, this mind-body health program can help you:
- Increase
network of HIV+ friends in a fun, supportive environment
- Lower
HIV-related symptoms
- Enhance
your immune system functioning
- Develop
sense of psychological and emotional well-being
- Raise
level of safe behavior
- Improve
the quality of your overall health
CHOICES
This
five-week small group program recognizes that living with HIV/AIDS can
prove stressful and aims to help participants build coping skills to
reduce stress. These skills include problem solving, decision making and
negotiating choices. In
CHOICES (Choosing Healthy Options & Improving
Communication EffectivenesS), we apply these skills to building
healthy, safe relationships and disclosing HIV-status to family, friends
and sex partners. We don’t
tell people that they should disclose, but provide a safe environment to
make informed decisions, role-playing situations one-on-one and in small
groups.
These
fun, interactive sessions use modern movie clips to launch small group
discussions each week. Participants
value the time to share common experiences, reduce stress and learn
decision-making skills.
